Joe McGill

I was born in the Columbia neighborhood of Bellingham and grew up on 5 acres just outside of town. Through homeschooling I learned to find answers and solve problems. Growing up I enjoyed working in the shop, riding bikes, and playing basketball and softball.

As a teenager and young adult I discovered rock climbing, running, mt biking, and weight training. In 2009 I took the Personal Training course offered at BTC, taught a bootcamp and worked with several personal training clients. But I still dealt with muscle imbalance and joint pain from poor conditioning and lack of instruction. In 2015 I began my CrossFit journey and earned my CrossFit Level 1 certificate. Through CrossFit training and mobility research and practice I’ve reduced knee pain, eliminated shoulder impingement, and increased strength and mobility.

I believe the human body was made to move! Our relatively fast and obvious adaptation to exercise is good evidence that we have the ability to optimize our strength and fitness for whatever task we want to pursue. Your body will adapt over time to any reasonable physical stress you place on it. Not just getting stronger from exercise, but getting weaker from inactivity. I believe through exercise and mobility work we can bring our bodies to an optimally functioning level, avoid injury, and achieve high levels of physical performance.

To reach those goals, it is important to reduce processed foods, additives, and added sugar. Getting outside in the sunlight and fresh air are also essential to a healthy body and mind. Balanced doses of intensities, exercises, and nature have proven to be some of the best ways to relieve stress and anxiety and ultimately lead a happier, healthier life.

To me CrossFit is eating clean, learning to move well, regularly challenging your physical and mental capacity, and learning new things whenever possible. It’s a tidy package of everything that has worked for me, and I want to share that with you!
